Officials forming new market board

Starkville Main Street Association officials are seeking volunteers to serve on the newly created Starkville Community Market Advisory Board.

Jennifer Prather, Starkville Community Market manager and Greater Starkville Development Partnership special events and projects coordinator, said SMSA is seeking eight to 12 individuals from diverse backgrounds to serve on the market’s guiding board.

The president of the group’s advisory board will serve as a voting member of the SMSA Board. Market advisory board representatives will serve three-year terms, and no member shall serve more than two consecutive terms. Board members will be confirmed at a regular meeting in late February, and terms will begin then.

“We want members with a willingness to be involved with the market and the desire to grow it to its full potential,” Prather said. “We’re talking with individuals from agricultural, art and business communities, but we really want passionate people who care about the market. We’ve reached out to many of its past volunteers.”

Applications are due at the Greater Starkville Development Partnership by 5 p.m. Feb. 4 and will be reviewed by the SMSA Board at its Feb. 12 meeting. Individuals interested in serving can contact Prather at (662) 323-3322 or email her at jprather@starkville.org.

SMSA took control of Starkville Community Market in October, a move which placed leadership and oversight with the group. SMSA officials pledged to fund advertising and organizational needs when it made the move. Prather, a former university events planner who also has a prior background with the GSDP, was hired in December and began work early this month.

“Community markets across the state typically fall into a few categories, and one of those is under local Main Street association control. We felt like it was natural for us to take on the existing community market program, but we’re also looking forward to enhancing the program and the effect that could have on the community as a whole,” GSDP Chief Operating Officer Jennifer Gregory said. “Forming the advisory board and creating leadership and vision are the first steps in this process. We look forward to engaging individuals that are veteran market volunteers, but we also are looking to get new members with interest in this type of community program who haven’t found the best way to get involved before.”
