BREAKING: All local city, county, private schools close due to winter weather

January 16, 2013

The Starkville School District, the Oktibbeha County School District, Starkville Academy and Starkville Christian School have all confirmed that they will remain closed Thursday instead of starting class at 10 a.m. as previously announced due to winter weather, including snowfall.
Confirmation for the SSD came from public information officer Nicole Thomas, and confirmation for the OCSD came from conservator Margie Pulley. Starkville Academy's website and Starkville Christian School's Facebook page have both posted updates announcing plans to remain closed.
Thomas has also confirmed that the SSD will no longer be meeting with stakeholders at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Starkville High School theatre to discuss the SSD's strategic plan. She said the meeting has been rescheduled for next Thursday, Jan. 23, at the same time and location.
Mississippi State University has announced through its MaroonAlert system that it will operate under normal hours today, but at 8:21 a.m., it made an announcement asking students and employees to come to campus at their own discretion.
"We are asking students and employees who live in areas where conditions do not allow them to reach campus safely to not attempt to drive to campus," the announcement said. "Accommodations will be made for employees and students who are not able to make it campus this morning because of weather conditions in their area."
East Mississippi Community College has posted similar messages to its Facebook page, saying that its classes will meet at its usual times but urging students to stay safe.
"We're aware that weather conditions may vary in the areas where our students live," the message said. "Please be very careful driving, and remember, you're the best judge of road conditions on your route. Make the decision that keeps you safe. All student absences today due to weather, at all campuses, will be excused."
The Starkville Daily News will continue to provide updates as new information on local schools' response to the winter weather arises.
