Maverick Brasher scored the only goal of the match, but it was enough for Starkville High School to upset the No. 1 team in the nation.

Brasher's goal gave the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 Class 6A, Region 4 victory over tough Madison Central at home Friday night.

With the victory, SHS improved its overall record to 13-2 and even its division mark at 1-1.

"Extremely proud of the effort and the mentality the boys had (Friday night)," Jacket soccer coach J.T. Coward said. "They bounced back from being embarrassed earlier in t he year 6-0 by MC and everyone bought in and decided not to let that happen again.

"Everyone who got in the game gave maximum effort for 80 minutes and it showed as we pulled off probably the best win in our program's history."

In the girls match, the Lady Jackets lost a 4-0 decision to Madison Central to begin the night. SHS slipped to 10-4-1 overall and 0-2 in the division.
