Labor Day suspect appointed new attorney

51-year-old Michael Wayne Devaughn, the 1990 Labor Day Murder suspect, was appointed a new attorney in Starkville Municipal Court Wednesday afternoon.

Municipal Court Clerk Shalonda Sykes said Devaughn’s Defense Attorney Stephanie Mallette withdrew from his case in court on Wednesday. Sykes said Devaughn was appointed Mark Williamson as his new attorney.

As previously reported by the Starkville Daily News, Municipal Court Judge Rodney Faver appointed Mallette as Devaughn’s defense attorney in Municipal Court Monday evening. Devaughn was arrested by the Starkville Police Department on one count of capital murder and one count of sexual battery Saturday. Devaughn currently remains in the Oktibbeha County Jail with his bond set to $11 million dollars for both counts.

Devaughn’s next court appearance is currently set for Oct. 22 at 6 p.m.
