EMCC wins 59-10 decision as Stephens claims 100th coaching victory

The No. 1 ranked East Mississippi Community College Lions fell behind early in Thursday night's game to Pearl River Community College, but scored 38 unanswered points and won a 59-10 decision.

With the result, EMCC head coach Buddy Stephens claimed his 100th career coaching victory.

After Justin Mary scored on a 5-yard run, Pearl River also ran in the two-point conversion to go up 8-0 with 7:41 remaining in the first quarter.

EMCC answered back just before the first quarter clock expired on a 2-yard touchdown run by Keon Moore. The extra point by Josh Smith got the Lions to within 8-7.

With Vijay Miller in at quarterback, EMCC faced a fourth down and goal from the 1-yard-line. Miller took the football across the goal line himself and the Lions took a 14-8 lead with 8:20 left in the first half.

EMCC made it a 21-8 halftime lead when Miller threw a 42-yard pass to Dontario Drummond on the final play of the first half and the advantage grew to 21-8.

In the third quarter, the Lions got going again. A 40-yard punt return by DJ Clayton put EMCC in position to get an 11-yard run by Deon McIntosh and the lead increased to 20 points at 28-8 with 12:50 left in the third quarter.

The duo of Miller and Drummond connected again with 8:53 remaining in the third quarter and a 24-yard touchdown gave the Lions a 35-8 lead.

A 22-yard field by Smith gave EMCC a 30-point advantage at 38-8, but Pearl River got two points back to close the third quarter on a safety with a bad snap by the Lions on a punt attempt..

EMCC put the game away in the fourth quarter with a 33-yard touchdown run by McIntosh, a 28-yard interception return for points by former Starkville High School player JaQuez Akins, and another scoring run by Moore.

The Lions (2-0) will make the trip to Itawamba Community College next Thursday.
