Garrett Lewis completed a touchdown pass to Howell Archer with 3:17 remaining in the game on Friday night and the Starkville Academy Volunteers began the 2018 season on a successful note with a 21-20 victory over the Lamar School Raiders.

In a battle of defending state champions, the Vols fell behind 20-14 in the fourth quarter before coming back for the win.

"Our kids just kept fighting and kept fighting," Starkville Academy head football coach Chase Nicholson said. "It was back and forth. It was a slugfest, but our defense kept us in it. We found a way to win it at the end."

The first touchdown of the season for the Volunteers came through the air as Lewis tossed a 20-yard completion to Nason Heflin for the score with 3:36 remaining in the first quarter.

After Joseph Hutchinson countered the Starkville Academy touchdown pass with one of his own for Lamar, but the extra point was blocked and the Vols still held the lead at 7-6.

Will Miller crashed into the end zone from 9 yards out for Starkville Academy with 26 seconds left in the first half to extend its lead to 14-6 at the intermission.

The Raiders scored 14 unanswered points to go up 20-14, but the Vols would not be denied as Lewis found Archer for the winning score.

Starkville Academy will play at home next Friday when French Camp Academy pays a visit to J.E. Logan Field.
