The Oktibbeha County Humane Society will offer adoption specials all week leading up to Clear the Shelters Day on Saturday.

The adoption fee for all cats and adult dogs will be $30 throughout the week. All adopted animals will have their age appropriate vaccinations, current preventatives, spay/neuter and microchipped.

OCHS Director of Development and Community Relations Martha Thomas said Clear the Shelters is a nationwide effort with hundreds of participating shelters.

"With a united message, we hope to raise awareness of how adoption helps homeless pets and make space in already full shelters for other pets in need," Thomas said.

Clear the Shelters Day is a nationwide pet adoption drive on Saturday with a goal to find loving homes for animals in need. Clear the Shelters is hosted by NBC and Telemundo, according to www. cleartheshelters.com.

OCHS Shelter Manager Christy Wells said around 45 dogs and over 60 cats are available for adoption currently at OCHS.

"We hope to clear the shelter by Saturday," Wells said. "We know that we may not necessarily do that, but it help alleviate a little bit of space here in the shelter. We're dealing with a little bit of overcrowding all summer."

According to cleartheshelters.com, over 13,000 pets have already been adopted this year, bringing the grand total to over 170,000 since the event began in 2015, as of press time on Wednesday.

Hundreds of shelters across the country are offering discounted adoption fees for the annual adoption drive on Aug. 18. In Mississippi, Southern Pines Animal Shelter in Hattiesburg, Humane Society of South Mississippi in Gulfport and Pearl River County SPCA in Picayune are also participating in the event.

Wells said on Saturday, OCHS staff will be handing out goody bags and treats to adopters.

OCHS is open from 11 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday through Saturday. For more information about adoptable pets from OCHS, visit www. ochsms.org or call (662) 338-9093.
