It’s now life in the fast lane for the Starkville Christian School softball program.

For the first time in school history, the Lady Cougars have accepted the challenge of playing fast pitch softball in the fall.

Starkville Christian softball coach Rachel Witbeck said the purpose of getting competition in the fall is to sharpen skills and carry those on into the spring slate.

“We’re working with our varsity pitchers and have some hip issues,” Witbeck said. “Our junior varsity pitcher has never pitched in a high school game before so we are working with her. We just want to make some improvements and build up from that in the spring to really develop team wise. More time as a team is really going to make a big impact for the future.”

Starkville Christian has also scheduled schools like Starkville Academy and Oak Hill Academy for the first time.

The Lady Cougars play at Hebron Christian Tuesday, then host Oak Hill on Friday. They play at Winston Academy on August 20, host Hebron Christian on August 23, host Winston Academy on August 27, play at Starkville Academy on August 30 and host Starkville Academy on September 6.

Witbeck said the players have shown great attitudes that has been noticed beyond the dugout.

“We have been super blessed to have an incredible group of girls, who love each other and love the Lord,” Witbeck said. “That allows them to focus on encouraging each other. That not only makes it better for the team, but also for the people watching. That’s been the coolest thing as coaches for us to see. They have great attitudes and are really strong mentally.”
