Banana provider Dole picks Dawgs to win CWS

The Mississippi State Bulldogs baseball team and its now-famous “Rally Banana” picked up a ringing endorsement from the world’s largest banana provider on Friday.

Ahead of the Bulldogs’ Saturday contest in the College World Series against the Washington Huskies, California-based Dole Food Company announced that it has picked MSU to win the 2018 national title.

Dole then gave a nod to MSU freshman infielder Jordan Westburg, who began the “Rally Banana” concept during a game earlier this month when he placed a half-eaten banana on his head for good luck.

Dole Director of Communications Bil Goldfield said everyone is familiar with the California Angels’ Rally Monkey, but this is the first time anyone has ever heard of a Rally Banana.

“In addition to being fun for players and fans, bananas have been shown to help athletes recover faster after peak performance than sports drinks and other foods – so there is science behind our pick, too," Goldfield said.
