SPD searching for suspects of scam at local gas station

December 1, 2012

Starkville Police Department issued a statement to make local gas station clerks aware of a flimflam scam which recently took place at the Fast Break on Miss. Highway 182.

SPD Detective Kenny Watkins said two males entered the convenience store to make a purchase with a $100 bill on Nov. 20. One acts as an accomplice, distracting a clerk by starting a conversation and blocking the view of the suspect in the act of deceiving another clerk. That suspect then asks the clerk to see the $100 he had just used to make a purchase. He then allegedly asks the clerk to break other $100 bills while covering the money with his hand and shuffling the money back and forth.

In this case, Watkins said, the suspect continued the act until he swindled the station out of $920.

SPD obtained surveillance video of a silver or white Chevrolet Impala backing out of a parking space and leaving the scene on the west side of the station. Watkins said there was a malfunction in transferring the video into a format that could be provided to the media so the public could see a screenshot of the video, which necessitated the press release.

The suspect that took the money is described in the release as a black male wearing a tan zip-up hoodie, a black and white cap and earbuds. He has facial hair and a silver set of fake teeth commonly referred to as a grill.

The accomplice is described as a black male wearing a gray T-shirt, black pants, white and black shoes and a blue and red hat.
Watkins said it has not yet been determined if the culprits are Oktibbeha County residents but it was obvious the scam was carefully planned in advance.

“Through distraction and smooth talking (the suspect) asked for change for bills and by the time he left (the clerk) didn’t even know what happened,” Watkins said. “It was a well thought out scheme for sure.”
Watkins said he wanted employees of local convenience stores and gas stations to be aware of the incident to prevent similar schemes from happening to them.
