Gondolier Italian Restaurant & Pizza will open its doors in the 550 Russell development in early summer.

The new Italian and pizza restaurant will be located next to The Mill on Russell Street, adjacent to downtown Starkville and Mississippi State University.

The architect for the project is Dale Partners, and Copeland and Johns is the construction firm. Gondolier will lease the 4,000-square-foot space from Castle Properties, who owns the building.

Castle Properties owner Mike Castleberry said Castle Properties reached out to Gondolier about opening a location in Starkville.

The approximate cost for the project is $6 million.

The family-owned restaurant chain was established in 1974 in Cleveland, Tennessee, and has more than 30 locations across the southeast, including Florida, Georgia, Tennessee and Kentucky.

"They make everything in the restaurant - nothing is frozen," Castleberry said. "One of their specialities is lasagna and pasta. It's a traditional Italian restaurant, and they serve pizza and calzones. They also make a great tiramisu."

Gondolier's menu includes more than 50 items, including salads, pasta, strombolis, calzones, pita wraps, Italian entrees and Greek specialities, along with a selection of appetizers, alcoholic beverages, fountain drinks, Italian coffee and desserts.

Castleberry said the restaurant will also feature a pick-up window.

The new 550 development will also feature condominiums and other businesses.

"The free-standing brick building will all be Gondolier," Castleberry said. "Then, Mugshots will take three quarters of the first floor of the three story building."

Castleberry said 15,000 square feet are still available to lease.

"There are eight condominiums on the second and third floor," he said.

Castleberry said he expects Gondolier to fit in well within the community and be a welcome addition to Starkville.

"They are a very community-minded company," he said. "They are going to be very active in the community, and well within our vision of The Mill and that area to have a lot of buzz to it and being a nice community congregating place. They are going to fit in well, and their meals are in a good price point."
