Shelby June "Meme" Hitt Oaks of Columbus, 68, died Nov. 1, 2012, at Baptist Memorial Hospital.  

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012, at First United Methodist Church with
Rev. Tony Proctor officiating and Rev. J. Nelson assisting.  
Burial will follow at Springhill Baptist Church Cemetery near Millport, Ala.  
Visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012, at Gunter and Peel Funeral Home.
Gunter and Peel Funeral Home of Columbus is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Oaks was born June 8, 1944, in Gordo, AL, to the late Samuel Lee and Willie Mae Junkin Hitt. She was a graduate of New Hope High School and Mississippi University for Women. Mrs. Oaks was a member of First United Methodist Church.

She was a dedicated and loving mother and grandmother.

Survivors include her daughter, Dr. Pam Sykes (Greg) of Columbus; son, Keith Oaks of Columbus; brother, Rayburn Hitt (Iris) of Waycross, Ga.; sister, Shirley Doyle of Columbus; and grandchildren, Matt Sykes, Hunter Sykes, Sarah Katherine Sykes, Tyler Riley and Sam Riley.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Tami Oaks Riley.  

Pallbearers will be Greg Sykes, Pete Riley, Matt Sykes, Tyler Riley, Hunter Sykes, and Sam Riley.  

Honorary pallbearers will be Leslie Smith, Jerry and Jan Horton, Doris Moody, Brenda Bailey, Dr. Christina Collins, Ivy Sunday School Class of First United Methodist Church, and the physicians and staff of Baptist Memorial Hospital.
