The Starkville High School cross country team should experience no surprises when they participate in its own Starkville Invitational meet on Saturday morning.
When it comes to the Mississippi State course at the Mississippi Horse Park, the Yellowjackets and Lady Jackets know what to expect.
"We had a great race at the Mississippi State meet," SHS cross country coach Caroline Woomer said. "It was very good and our kids had a great time. We practice out there every week, so they love the course and know the course."
There are 19 teams scheduled to run at the SHS Invitational and Woomer is happy to see that kind of response.
"They are not all varsity teams and one team only has three runners, but to have so many teams come and some have never been here before that run in our meet, I'm excited," Woomer said.
The action begins with junior varsity girls at 9 a.m., junior varsity boys at 9:30 a.m., varsity girls at 10 a.m. and varsity boys at 10:30 a.m. The awards will be handed out at 11:15 a.m.
Woomer expects an improved performance out of her runners after falling behind in their progress recently.
"In our last meet, we had some struggles to overcome, so we were a little slow with our times, but they are ready to make up for it this week," Woomer said. "This should be a good race because they want to make up for last week, especially the girls."
On the boys side, Woomer looks for continued contributions from Joseph MacGown, Damian Grady, Ethan Musser, Alex Ross and Nathan Methvin.
The Lady Jackets have Kate Mattox, Walker Mattox, Shanika Musser, Abigail Arinder and Anna Jackson as runners.
