CANTON – The Starkville High School Yellowjackets remained unbeaten in Class 5A, Region 2, District 6 play with a 42-0 shutout of the Canton Tigers on Friday night.
SHS tailback Preston Baker rushed for 133 yards and a score as the Jackets stand at the top of the region standings.
Starkville scored on its first possession when quarterback Gabe Myles connected with Princeton Jones on a 25-yard throw.
After failing to convert on a fake field goal from the 5-yard-line on their second possession the Jackets added to their lead when Jaquez Horsley found the end zone from 31 yards out to increase the lead to 14-0.
"It was a little bit sloppy for us in the first quarter but 21 points in the second quarter really put the game away," said SHS head coach Jamie Mitchell.
The Jackets continued to dominate the first half of football by pounding the football as Horsley added his second touchdown run, this time from 14 yards out. Just before the half Starkville expanded its lead to 28-0 with a Baker plunge from 6 yards out.
"I thought Baker was really great and I thought Horsley was right there with him," Mitchell said. "It is just great to have those guys we can count on with our offense for a change."
Sophomore quarterback Caleb Wilson entered the game to open the second half for the Jackets and led a pair of scoring drives which were capped by a 19-yard touchdown toss to Kentrell Spencer and a 5-yard scoring run from Stanley Higgins.
The offense rolled up 398 yards of total offense with 311 coming on the ground on 44 carries.
While the offense controlled the clock, the defense was impressive in its own right as the unit held Canton to just 70 yards of total offense for the game. Starkville has still yet to allow an offensive touchdown to region opponents this season.
"That's been the constant for us throughout the injuries," Mitchell said. "Defensively, we just keep bringing it every night and you have to get efforts like that if you're going to win at this level."
Starkville returns home Friday night for homecoming against Yazoo City.ÂView more articles in:
