Officials warn of phone scam

Oktibbeha County officials are warning residents to be aware of a new scam carried out over the phone.
Circuit Clerk Glenn Hamilton said a local man received a call this week from a number that appeared to be the Circuit Clerk’s office. The voice on the phone claimed to be with the District Attorney’s office and said he had warrants for the resident’s arrest. The voice then claimed the warrants could be taken care of with a payment over the phone.
“We don’t do business this way,” Hamilton said.
Hamilton reported the call to the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Department, which is investigating the case. The scammers somehow were able to make the phone call appear like it was coming from the Circuit Court’s office, Hamilton said.
Sheriff Steve Gladney encouraged citizens to be aware of the scam and not give away personal information over the phone. If residents believe they are being scammed, they can call the Sheriff’s Department at 662-323-2421 or the Circuit Clerk’s office at 662-323-1356.
