Robbie Norton of Cedar Bluff was ordered Friday by the Clay County Circuit Court to pay a total of $220,080 to Metropolitan Casualty in relation to the May 22, 2011 collision that left Starkville resident Jan Morgan in critical condition.
Metropolitan Casualty Insurance, which paid Morgan $210,000 for expenses incurred from the accident, filed a lawsuit March 28 against Morgan and won by default since Norton failed to respond to the claim or show up for the hearing by Metropolitan Casualty requesting default judgement.
Norton was given 30 days from March 28 to respond to the lawsuit.
Norton was found guilty of negligence in November of 2011 by the Clay County Justice Court several months after hitting Morgan with her vehicle while Morgan and an acquaintance were cycling along Highway 50 in Clay County.
Norton was fined $50 after being found guilty.
Norton’s attempt to appeal the decision of Justice Court resulted in the Clay County Circuit Court upholding the decision of Justice Court and giving Norton an additional sentence of community service.
