MABEN â€“ Freshman Jack Wilson and sophomore Deangelo Liggins combined for 276 yards and four touchdowns to help the East Webster Wolverines defeat J.Z. George 34-6 on Friday night.
It wasn't exactly the start that East Webster coach Doug Wilson had in mind, but as the game went on, he was more pleased.
"Our guys were not as physical as I would have liked in the first half," Wilson said. "In the second half, we came out strong and put ourselves in a position to make plays.â€ť
J.Z. George won the toss, but on third down was intercepted by Tyler Doss putting East Webster in scoring position. The Wolverines proceeded with a 2-minute, five-play drive, completed by a 15-yard touchdown run by Liggins.
The Wolverines then got the ball back after a three and out by the Jaguars. This time quarterback Wilson pounded J.Z. George's defense on a 2-yard run, putting East Webster ahead two scores.Â Tyler Cosby's PAT was good making it a 14-0 ballgame at the close of the first quarter.
Cosby continued to be the Wolverine offense in the second quarter as the freshman tacked on three points with a 36-yard field goal. East Webster then scored late in the half when Liggins ran it for 9 yards, capped off by another point after touchdown by Cosby.Â Doss picked up his second interception of the game, as the junior picked off Randy Stallworth to close the half .
Liggins rushed for 121 yards on 16 carries for the Wolverines during the first half, while teammate Wilson completed 3 of 6 passes for 30 yards and had nine rushes for an additional 41 yards.
East Webster scored once during the third quarter on a 24-yard rush by Wilson. Cosbyâ€™s kick split the uprights to put the Wolverines ahead 31-0 after three.
Cosby capped East Websterâ€™s scoring for the night with a 39-yard field goal to make it a 34-0 game.
J.Z. George scored its only touchdown late in the game when Jamal Archie completed a 70-yard run.Â The Jaguars attempted to go for two, but the run was stopped short of the goal line.
â€śLooking ahead, we just need to continue to improve and strengthen as a team,â€ť coach Wilson said.
East Webster improved their records to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in Class 2A, Region 2, District 4 hosts Williams Sullivan for homecoming next Friday.View more articles in:
