Lady Bulldogs stand in fourth place after day one

September 10, 2012

WEST POINT – The Mississippi State Lady Bulldog golf team remains in the hunt as it opens play in the Old Waverly Bulldog Invitational.

MSU fired a 297 during the first round which was good enough for fourth place after day one.

The 9-over par team total was the fifth-lowest open round ever for the Lady Bulldogs.

“Fantastic start to our season,” MSU women's coach Ginger Brown-Lemm said. “We had a strong team effort today. To be playing with programs ranked in the top 30 and be only three shots back of second is an incredibly inspiring place to be.”

The Tulane Green Wave took the early lead in the inaugural event with a 2-over-par 290. They hold a two-shot lead over Kentucky and Arkansas who fired a 294.

Green Wave Sophomore Gemma Dryburgh leads all individuals with an impressive 3-under-par 69.

Sophomore Rica Tse paced the Lady Bulldogs with a 1-over-par 73 on Monday. The New Zealand-native took advantage of two birdie opportunities on par-3’s on the front nine, and delivered a birdie on the par-5 15th.

Ally McDonald posted a 2-over-par 74 following her stellar season a year ago. In her college debut, Gabi Oubre’ matched McDonald’s 74. Mary Langdon Gallagher fell just two strokes behind the duo with a 76, while Elena Warren rounded out the MSU leaderboard with an 81.

Second-round play begins today with 8:30 a.m. tee times with the Lady Bulldogs set to tee off on the first tee.

“(Today) is a new day, and we left several shots on the golf course,” Brown-Lemm recalled. “We fully anticipate a strong second round so we can put ourselves in position to win the tournament.”

State fans are encouraged to make their way to Old Waverly Golf Club to cheer on MSU. Admission is free with action to continue through Wednesday’s final round.

“It was energizing to see our administration, staff and other sports represented in the gallery today.” Brown-Lemm said. “Having our community and members of Old Waverly support our team is inspiring.”
