Recruiting irregularity draws NCAA probe

August 23, 2012

Mississippi State University’s football program is under investigation by the NCAA for possible recruiting irregularities.

Officials from MSU and the NCAA confirmed Thursday that the two organizations are working closely in regard to a lengthy and ongoing recruitment investigation.

“Over the last several months, Mississippi State has worked in cooperation with the NCAA to examine a potential recruiting irregularity,” Mississippi State officials said in a press release issued Thursday. “We are nearing the end of this examination, and it is out intent to provide additional details when it is complete.”
The release contained no other statements.

Mississippi State legal council deferred all comments to MSU athletic officials, while the Associated Press reports NCAA spokesperson Stacey Osborn confirmed the two organizations were “working cooperatively.” NCAA officials provided no further comments or details about the investigation.

According to ESPN reports, Memphis East High School football coach Marcus Wimberly was contacted by the NCAA and questioned about former MEHS student and current MSU freshman defensive back Will Redmond.

MSU officials have not said if Redmond’s recruitment is under NCAA review.

Redmond attended MSU during the summer and participated during fall camp. During his prep career Redmond amassed 1,355 all-purpose yards with 51 tackles, four interceptions, and nine kickoff returns for 318 yards and two scores.

Also Thursday, MSU announced the hiring of Tim Brewster as its new wide receivers coach, replacing recently departed Angelo Mirando. Mirando stepped down from his position Sunday, citing personal reasons.

MSU officials have not said if Mirando’s resignation is linked with the ongoing NCAA investigation.
