Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Department authorities shot and killed a man Monday after he stabbed a deputy multiple times.

OCSD Chief Deputy Chadd Garnett said deputies were dispatched to Cannon Road at 5:47 p.m. after receiving a report of a man standing in the road and brandishing a knife.

“They located him and when they approached him, the suspect attacked the deputies. He was tased and pepper sprayed, which did not stop his aggression,” Garnett said. “One deputy was stabbed multiple times, and deadly force was used on the suspect. The suspect has been identified, but we’re not going to release his name or the name of the deputies at this time.”

Garnett said investigation of the incident was handed to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations.

Garnett but said the deputy should make a full recovery.

“He is at this time in OCH (Regional Medical Center Emergency Room) with non-life-threatening injuries,” Garnett said.

OCSD Commander Brett Watson said no information is available at this time as to a motive behind the suspect’s actions.

“We’re not really 100 percent sure of the circumstances of why he was out here yet,” Watson said. “That’s part of what the MBI will be doing in the course of their investigation is taking statements from people who may have witnessed it or have knowledge of what happened before deputies arrived.”

Oktibbeha County Fire Services Coordinator Kirk Rosenhan confirmed local volunteer firefighters and emergency responders from the department arrived at the scene after 6 p.m. to assist the injured officer and establish a perimeter.
