The Starkville High School girls' volleyball team learned early in the year what it took to be a successful team.

That was witnessed by those who attended Thursday night's match in the Beehive when the Lady Yellowjackets beat division foe Ridgeland 3-0.

"It's huge, especially this early in the season," SHS head coach Lauren Love said of winning the first division match. "It's great to get that first district win and hopefully to lead us into our next match."

The Lady Yellowjackets, who improved to 4-3 overall, went 1-3 in a tournament to open the season. Love was pleased with what her girls learned and have won four straight since then.

"We played some pretty tough teams and that's why we like that tournament," Love said. "We can see some of the better teams in the area. It was really a wake up call. We need to get better as a team. We were able to learn from that 1-3 showing."

SHS took an early 1-0 lead in the first set. The Lady Titans tied it at one, but the Lady Jackets rattled off 13 straight points with April Reese serving during 12 of those points.

"We just worked this summer, and every time we are in the gym, we just have to stay focused," Love said. "We just play one point at a time. If we do happen to lose a point, it's just worth one point. We get a point and we just work to build on that."

SHS took the first set 25-13, won the second set 25-11 and sealed the deal with a 25-12 final set.

The Lady Jackets were not challenged for much of the match, but that is something Love does not worry about to much.

"A win is a win so we are definitely pleased with this, especially being a district win," Love said. "We have to take on and focus every point and take every point as a challenge."

Reese led Starkville with three kills. Khris Carr and Courtney Wilson each had two kills.

Wilson had two digs and eight aces.

"Courtney did a great job with her serves," Love said. "We always love an ace. Maintaining that focus through multiple serves is important, and we were just proud she was able to do that."

The Lady Jackets will be back in action next Thursday night when they travel to Amory. Junior varsity starts at 5:30 p.m. with varsity following at 6:30 p.m.
