New Eupora coach has busy first month

August 12, 2012

EUPORA – It has been quite a busy month for Kaley Harris, the new softball coach at Eupora High School.

That's how long Harris has been on the job at the Webster County school, taking over for Trae Embry, and one of her first tasks was managing the preseason Eupora Classic on Saturday.

Harris was running from field to field and making sure the tournament was on schedule.

There was also the responsibility of coaching the Lady Eagles.

"It has been a learning experience," said Harris, who played for Embry at Eupora and graduated in 2003. "I was definitely not prepared. I had always been a player so there was a lot more to learn, but the girls have been great and we're learning together. We're going to get there. We've done good so far and had great practices."

The Lady Eagles won their two games of the tournament. They got a home run from Allye Steadman and defeated Weir 16-1, then Sarah Grace Wade and Erica Hawes delivered one double each during a 5-2 victory over Columbus.

Harris likes the way her squad is playing defensively, but would like to see a little more out of the hitting department.

"We're coming around," Harris said.

The short-term goal for Harris and the Lady Eagles is to win the division, but said the long-term goal is "to take it to state one day."

It was not the type of start the Starkville Lady Yellowjackets were looking for in Eupora as they lost a 15-0 decision in three innings to North Pontotoc.

North Pontotoc scored three runs in the first inning, then exploded for nine runs in the second and added three more in the third.

"It gives us an indication of what we need to do," Starkville coach Lisa Spencer said. "It's preseason still so we'll be ready for the next one."

The Lady Jackets, who were scheduled to play Hatley later in the day, had three hits against North Pontotoc. McKayla Hayes, Donnasha Hubbard and Kayla Tate had one single each.
