Lady Yellowjackets anticipate the season

August 9, 2012

The Starkville Lady Yellowjackets believe they have taken the necessary steps to see success on the slow-pitch softball field this season.

After coming off the spring fast-pitch season and a summer of participating in the fast-pitch league at the Starkville Sportsplex, the Lady Jackets are hoping the work pays off in the slow-pitch game.

"The girls have been working hard this summer and braving this hot weather," Starkville slow pitch softball coach Lisa Spencer said. "They want to win and we're excited."

The Lady Jackets begin the season in the Eupora Classic Saturday. SHS looks to have a better result this summer than recent years where the program has struggled.

"I honestly think we're going to be a success this year," said Donnasha Hubbard, a utility player for the Lady Jackets. "We know to work as a team and build up together."

Spencer still considers her Starkville squad young, but likes the spirit of the players.

For example, the Lady Jackets were so eager for Monday's practice that they all showed up to the field before Spencer.

"As you can see, they all beat me here," Spencer said. "We have some good athletes with good attitudes."

Spencer believes the strength of this year's team is defense, especially with the outfield and middle infield.

Starkville plays twice in Eupora Saturday with back-to-back games against North Pontotoc at 3:15 p.m. and Hatley at 4:30 p.m.
