Simpson becomes Mississippi State's 13th football commitment

July 27, 2012

Mississippi State now has 13 commitments for the 2013 signing class with the most recent commitment of defensive end Trent Simpson of Oxford, Ala.

Simpson, who made his commitment public on Friday, actually pledged to be a Bulldog last week.

"I actually committed last week and my high school coach set up a press event at the school so I could have a bit of a day to myself," said Simpson. "I called and told coach (Dan) Mullen and coach (Geoff) Collins. They were both very excited. I knew this was where I wanted to be and I am very happy to be a member of the Bulldog family."

The 6-5, 240-pound Simpson was one of the many athletes attending MSU’s football camps this summer.

That atmosphere is all it took for Simpson.

"I have been on campus twice and I really like the small town atmosphere and the smaller campus,” he said. “I respect the heck out of both coach Collins and coach Mullen for the way they treat you and make you feel like family."

During his junior season at Oxford (Ala.) High School, Simpson recorded 52 tackles and 10.5 sacks. His success and style of play leads him to believe he is a good fit for the MSU system.

"The thing about like about the Mississippi State defense is they play with aggressiveness and toughness,” Simpson said. “The coaches said that is what they see in me and why I would be a great fit for their defense."

State fans don’t have to worry about his commitment either because he’s happy with his decision.

"I am totally committed to MSU," Simpson said. "It is MSU 100 percent and that's the only school I will visit or anything. I plan on coming to MSU for as many games as I can this year."
