Mavis Byrd

Mavis Bryant Byrd of Brooksville, 76, passed away Saturday, July 14, 2012 at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at 11 a.m. in Millport, Ala. at the Macedonia Freewill Baptist Chruch.
Burial will be in the Mt. Olive Baptist Church Cemetery in Millport, Ala. with Dowdle Funeral Home, Millport, Ala., directing.

Mrs. Byrd was born on May 17 in Millport, Ala. to the late Joe Lee and Eva McGee Bryant. She was a resident of Lamar County, Alabama for 31 years before moving to Oktibbeha County where was a homemaker, loving wife and mother for 26 years. In 1995, shoe moved to Noxubee County where lived until her death. She was a member of Sovereign Grace Baptist Church in Columbus.

In 1959, Mrs. Byrd began singing gospel music with the Bryant Trio. In 1967, the group changed its name to the Singing Bryants when Sam Byrd, her husband joined the group. In all, she sang gospel music for over 53 years. She was inducted into the Lamar County Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1997.

Survivors include her husband of 44 years, Sam William Byrd III of Brooksville; two daughters, Angie (Wayne) Tidwell of Bartlett, Tenn., and Eva Jo (Ernie) Surunis of Columbus; son, Sam William Byrd IV of Brooksville; two sisters, Nettie B. Ballinger of Fayette, Ala., and Gail (Waymon) Fields of Millport, Ala.; two brothers, Fred Bryant of Millport, Ala., and Morris (Pat) Bryant of Northport, Ala.; four grandchildren, Jessica McMillan, Chris Braddock, Will Bonner and Bryant Bonner; two great-grandchildren, Hailey Ruggs and Austin McMillan; and a multitude of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers are Danleigh Bryant, Mark Bryant, Keith Bryant, Chris Bryant, Andrew Bryant and Tim Fields.

Honorary pallbearers are Bill Crawford, Shep Crawford, Stacey Crawford, Stewart Crawford, Shelby Crawford, Billy Crossley, friends, family and best friend, Nadine Bryant.

Memorials may be given to Sovereign Grace Baptist Church of Columbus, St. Judes in Memphis, Tenn., Paralyzed Veterans or the Palmer Home of Columbus.
