First-time head coaches are always excited to have the job and our ready to get to work immediately.

For new Ackerman volleyball head coach Jamie Huffman, that is an understatement.

"I am very excited to start," Huffman said. "We start on Monday. I'm really just excited to work with the girls and build my own philosophy with them and see how we do."

Huffman hails from Missouri where she played high school volleyball and basketball at Savannah High School. She went on to play basketball at Truman State University.

She was an assistant coach at William Chrisman High School in Missouri, where she worked with freshman, junior varsity and varsity squads. Most recently she was the assistant girls' basketball coach at Germantown High School.

When Huffman visited and had her interview, it was a no-brainer.

"I liked the school and I liked the atmosphere," Huffman said. "The head principal, when he talked to me I was very enthusiastic about it. I wanted to work for him and be a part of the whole Ackerman family."

Huffman approaches volleyball much like life and wants that philosophy to be adopted by her team.

"Anything you do be passionate about and work hard," Huffman said. "It's been in all sports I've ever played and coached."

Ackerman finished second last year in its division right behind Caledonia. Huffman knows how good her team can be.

"I knew the division was really small," Huffman said. "I knew we were pretty good and we had a really good chance of making the playoffs. The girls are really good. We are really excited."

Huffman does have a good senior leader in Dayna Presley. Presley competed in the All-Star game earlier this week. Huffman is ready to get Presley out on the court and into a leadership spot.

"I'm excited for Dana," Huffman said. "She is going to feel a good role as a leader."
