The Mathiston 10-year-old All-Stars remained alive at the Dizzy Dean State Tournament on Saturday, but it wasn't easy at Starkville's McKee Park.
After defeating county rival Eupora 13-7 in the first game of the day, Mathiston came back to out-slug Hamilton 16-15 later in the day.
Coach Bo McKee's Mathiston All-Stars were led at the plate by Preston Hill with a pair of doubles, while Parker Reed added double and a single. Ross Cochran had a double, and Conner Shurden chipped in two singles.
With the victory, Mathiston plays Clinton at 10 a.m. today.
Mathiston 13, Eupora 7
Mathiston was able to make a big lead stand in a matchup of Webster County teams.
After Eupora jumped out to a 1-0 advantage, Mathiston scored six runs in the first inning and five more in the second to go on top 11-1.
Eupora chipped its way back into the game with three runs in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth to close the gap to 11-7, but Mathiston added to insurance runs in the fifth.
Conner Shurden had three singles to lead Mathiston, while Preston Hill and Ross Cochran had two singles each. Cohen Clark, Parker Reed, Cameron Woods and Samuel Turner had one single each.
For Eupora, Jacob Collum, James Fletcher, Jarren Holmes, Ryan Cooper and Josh Power had one hit each.
Calhoun City 15, Eupora 12
Calhoun City won in a slugfest and eliminated Eupora from the tournament.
After Calhoun City jumped out to a 4-0 advantage in the first inning, Eupora cut the margin to 4-3 in the second before Calhoun City extended the lead to 9-3 with five runs in the second.
Eupora tied the game with six runs scored in the third and took a 11-9 with a pair of runs in the fourth.
The two teams traded one run in the bottom of the fourth and top of the fifth, then Calhoun City got the runs needed and held Eupora scoreless in the sixth to secure the victory.
Holmes and Tanner Brown had a pair of singles to pace the Eupora seven-hit outing, while Garrett Crim was credited with a triple and Cooper added a double. Fletcher had the only other hit for the Webster County squad.
Ackerman 13, Winona 2
Ackerman won its second-straight victory via the 10-run rule.
After taking control of the game by scoring two runs in the first inning, three in the second and five in the third, Winona got its only two runs of the game in the third.
Ackerman collected its final three runs in the fourth inning.
Getting one hit each for Ackerman were Donavan Turner, Logan Stirewalt, Quez McNeal, Trace Beard and Dawson Jones.
Caledonia 6, Ackerman 2
Caledonia shut down the Ackerman bats and eliminated the Choctaw County team from the State Tournament.
Ackerman scored one run in second inning and the other in the third, but it was not enough.
Devean Turner had a double for Ackerman, while McNeal and Donavan Turner had one single each.View more articles in:
