MATHISTON - East Webster tennis player Molly Davis has reached this stage of her career because of hard work.

As Davis advances to the next level, it's a philosophy she expects will keep her headed in a positive direction.

Davis signed with the Meridian Community College Lady Eagles on Wednesday morning in the office building of East Webster's Wood College campus.

"I've been through a lot of summer tennis and lessons," Davis said. "It has paid off. I'm excited about it and think it's going to be a great opportunity for me. I'm really going to enjoy the school."

Meridian Community College tennis coach Wanda McPhail, who was recently recognized as national women's tennis Coach of the Year, said hard work is the identity of the program and believes Davis will fit right in.

McPhail has recruited from the Wolverine stock before and knew she couldn't go wrong by doing it again.

"She's come from a tradition and knows what's expected of her," McPhail said. "I look for players willing to work hard and develop some consistency. It's not about power and I think Molly will be willing to do that.

"She is coming to a program where our strength is we're going to work hard. As long as she's willing to do that, she will improve quickly."

McPhail told the group of supporters that witnessed the signing that the Lady Eagles look for specific things in players.

"We want someone that will excel academically and has love for the game of tennis," McPhail said. "We look for the entire package. We want someone who is well-rounded and will represent the college in a positive light. Molly is a wonderful young lady and will fit right into our program."

All it took for Davis was one visit to the Meridian campus and she was hooked.

"I went there for my tour and I absolutely loved it," Davis said. "I'm going to get along with (McPhail) and that helped too."

Davis was a member of the student council at East Webster, serving as class representative in 2009 and class secretary in 2010, 2011 and 2012. She was an honor graduate with the class of 2012 and was a member of the Biology Club, Spanish Club and other organizations within the school.

On the tennis court, Davis helped win the girls doubles Class 2A State championship for the Wolverines in 2009 with second place finishes in 2011 and 2012.

East Webster tennis coach Pam Champion said Davis will be missed, but is confident she will benefit the MCC team.

"Molly is very well-liked and is a great tennis player also," Champion said. "She's been involved since the 4th grade when our kids started playing tournaments together then. She is a very well-rounded a respectable young lady."
