Summer time for many high school sports teams is all about improvement.

That is how Starkville High School softball head coach Wendy Jolly views the high school summer fastpitch softball league at the Starkville Sportsplex.

"Just to improve what we started from the beginning of the season to improve fundamentally," Jolly said. "To come together closer as a team. Get more experience together. They are a young team."

Thursday night, the Lady Yellowjackets played two games. They tied with Russell Christian Academy 3-3 and played a late game against Starkville Academy.

"I don't really know about anything about the teams we will be playing except for Ackerman," Jolly said. "We played them during the regular season. I am excited to play some different teams that we haven't seen."

SHS is coming off a playoff berth from the past season, but they are losing pitcher Shelby Knox due to graduation.

Many might think pitching may be a big concern for the Lady Jackets but Jolly is confident in the pitchers she has.

"We have several pitchers," Jolly said. "It's just getting more experience this summer on the mound with batters in the batter's box. I think we will be alright; we have plenty of pitchers."

Kenley Hayes pitched for the Lady Jackets against Russell Christian.

"She is usually consistent around the plate," Jolly said. "That is what she did (Thursday). She struggled a little bit, but she fought back. They scored three runs in the first inning and after that she shut them down."

One thing Jolly is focusing on this summer is hitting. There are very few high school pitchers who will dominate the sport, so being able to score often is a big plus.

"That is something we have been working really hard on in practice the last few weeks," Jolly said. "I am interested to see how it will carry over into the games."

SHS can be seen at the Starkville Sportsplex throughout the summer. The Lady Jackets are back in action Thursday at 7 p.m.
