Interesting home games highlight SA's football schedule

June 4, 2012

There are some interesting challenges ahead for the Starkville Academy Volunteers on the football field in 2012.

Some of the bigger games are going to be held right in Starkville.

The Vols host Golden Triangle rival Heritage Academy on Aug. 24 and teams that gave them two of their three loses last week with Jackson Prep on Sept. 21 and Presbyterian Christian on Oct. 26.

"There's no rest for the weary and we're excited about games like Heritage and Prep coming to Starkville," Starkville Academy football coach Jeff Terrill said. "It will be a tremendous challenge."

The Vols, who played for the MAIS Class AAA-Division II State championship and finished with a 10-3 record last season, participate in the Jackson Academy jamboree on Aug. 10, then travel to St. Andrews to start the season on Aug. 17.

After the Heritage game, SA makes the trip to Magnolia Heights on Aug. 31 and hosts three-straight games against Leake Academy (Sept. 7), Hillcrest Christian (Sept. 14) and Jackson Prep.

Road games against Copiah (Sept. 28) and Parklane (Oct. 5) take place before the Vols face Winston for homecoming on Oct. 12.

Starkville Academy completes the regular season by traveling to East Rankin on Oct. 19 and the home game with PCS.

The Vols prepare for the grind of the season by participating in 7-on-7 camps this summer at Mississippi State Friday and at East Mississippi Community College on June 20.

Terrill said it's important to stay in condition and give attention to specific areas that need improvement.

"We have some young kids and we're getting adjusted to a new coach on staff (Brad Butler) so there is a little bit more of a learning curve," Terrill said. "The biggest thing is getting the little bit of changes on defense installed, getting them stronger and well-conditioned for the tough season ahead."

Preseason practice begins for SA on July 30.
