Memorial Day pays tribute to fallen soliders

May 27, 2012

The Greater Starkville Development Partnership’s military affairs committee will hold a Memorial Day ceremony 11 a.m. Monday in front of the Oktibbeha County Courthouse on Main Street.

Robert Green, undergraduate coordinator for Mississippi State University’s Bagley College of Engineering and commanding officer in the Naval Sea Systems Command, said the event will mark a special day for residents of Starkville and Oktibbeha County to recognize the men and women of this area who died for their country.

“We’ll be reading the names of those who have given their lives in defense of this nation,” Green said. “They are the ones who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.”

Green said along with remarks from keynote speaker Col. Matthew C. Isler, United States Air Force, from the Columbus Air Force Base, members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will be present to lay wreaths at the courthouse monument in honor of those who have fallen.

Amy Tuck, former lieutenant governor and current executive director of campus operations at MSU, said she is very humbled by the opportunity to support the men and women of the nation’s armed forces.

“They have my eternal gratitude,” Tuck said. “Memorial Day is an opportunity for us to express our appreciation to these men and women who gave everything to protect our freedom.”

Tuck said her father fought in World War II and received the Purple Heart for his service.

“This event is so important,” she said. “I thank those who are planning on coming Monday to celebrate the sacrifice of these men and women.”

The Memorial Day ceremony begins at 11 a.m. in front of the courthouse on Main Street, and Starkville residents are encouraged to attend and support the men and women of the armed forces.
