Rebecca Tabb is sporting a new look these days.
The owner of R. Tabb and Co. Boutique and Gifts decided last Wednesday to cut her long hair for reasons far from personal.
“I decided it was time for a change and that I wanted to donate my hair for cancer patients,” Tabb said. “I want to give it to someone who is grieving.”
Partnering with Pink Heart Funds based in Long Beach, Tabb welcomed the idea of donating her hair to a cause capable of bringing joy to women in their darkest times, she said.
“I want someone who is suffering to feel like they can put this hair on and go face the world,” she said. “I think somebody else needs it.”
Tabb said she began growing her hair out over three years ago, and the time came recently when she was ready to let it all go.
“I knew it was long enough to donate, but it was also long enough to finally release some memories from the past three years,” she said.
Tabb was exposed to cancer at an early age when a friend of hers in high school died from lung cancer at the age of 16, she said.
“Cancer is all around us,” she said. “You just never know who might be affected by it one day.”
Tabb joined the fight against cancer later in life when she attended Mississippi State University and became of member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority, she said.
“I had no idea that was the philanthropy until I went through rush,” she said. “It was like fate.”
Tabb donated 12 inches of her hair to Pink Heart Funds, an organization located near to where Tabb grew up.
“I’m from Gulfport and found about this group from friends of mine back home,” she said.
Along with a hair donation, $250 is required to fund the making of each wig, Tabb said. Friends and customers helped raise the money, she said.
“I wanted it to be a done process,” she said. “I also wanted to opportunity to donate more money than necessary to help with the costs of any of the other wigs being made.”
Tabb said once the organization fashions a wig, each donor is given a picture and contact information for the recipient.
“I’m so excited to know who this person is,” she said. “We’re going to have this amazing connection and, in some way, be a part of each others’ lives forever.”
Tabb encourages other women to consider donating their hair to organizations like Pink Heart Funds.
“I know a lot of people can’t give their time or their money,” she said. “But I think this is a great opportunity for women to truly make a difference is someone else’s life.”
