Hugh H. Vaughn, Ph.D.

Dr. Hugh H. Vaughn, originally of maben and more recently of Memphis, Tenn., has died at the age of 71 after a lengthy illness. Hugh passed away on Friday, December 29, 2006, at Saint Peter Villa care facility in Memphis.
Hugh graduated from Maben High School and received his bachelor of science degree from Mississippi State University, his Masters Degree from the University of Tennessee and his Doctorate from Memphis State University. He opened the University of Tenn. School of Social Work 43 years ago. He worked for years as a professor with the School of Social Work at UT Memphis. He served as Associate Dean of the School of Social Work for approximately 10 years and has contributed much to his chosen profession.
The son of Joe Ed and Myrtice Vaughan, Hugh is survived by his special friend of 40 years, Don Vaughn; two sisters, Farrell Fulgham of Kosciusko and Sue Long and husband Bob of Starkville; two brothers, Dr. Charles Vaughan and wife Joan of Starkville, and Layne Vaughan and wife Norma of Huntsville, Ala. Hugh had a special bond with all his nieces and nephews; Calvin Fulgham, Brenda Nail, Greg Bowen, Melissa Goodman, Renee Bishop, Angie Pickens, Jason Bowen, Randy Vaughan, Jennifer Vaughan and Lori Beth Vaughan. He leaves behind many friends from the Memphis area that has been so much a part of his life.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 30, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Welch Funeral Home. The service will be in the Welch Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 31, 2006, with burial to follow in the Enon Cemetery in Ackerman.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Dr. Hugh H. Vaughn Fellowship Endowment, College of Social Work, University of Tennessee, 5723 Middlebrook Pike, Knoxville, TN 37921-9918, and/or the American Cancer Society.
