A group of Mississippi State University sports communication undergraduate students and sports administration graduate students received hands on knowledge of the sports industry from professionals in the business during a recent trip toAtlanta,Ga., through SPORTS. SPORTS is a student organization for students at the university for aspire to work in the sports business industry.
The students spent four days in the capital city of the peach state touring and listening to individuals on many aspects of sports management, ranging from financial issues, strategic planning, sales and marketing in sports, facility management, branding and licensing on the intercollegiate level, and human resource management. The group enjoyed visiting the distinguished East Lake Country Club, host course for the PGA Tour’s end of the season Tour Championship that includes Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and others. The MSU contingent was also given a tour of the Atlanta Falcon’s practice facility in Flowery Branch,Ga., the state-owned Georgia Dome (site of the 2007 NCAA Men’s Final Four) and ventured around Turner Field, home of the Atlanta Braves. “The main thing I came away with from the trip is that to be successful in sports, you have to know how to sell and having work experience from internships and volunteering at events on the resume’, said senior undergraduate student Bradley Purvis. “I really enjoyed getting a chance to tour Turner Field, especially since I am a huge Braves fan. It was great to the clubhouse and stuff that you don’t get to see on television all the time.”
Students spoke with executive leaders from the Atlanta Falcons, Georgia Tech Athletic Association, International Sports Properties (ISP), Georgia Dome, Collegiate Licensing Company, the PGA Tour’s Tour Championship, the Atlanta Sports Council, Atlanta Braves, and the Atlanta Spirit, who own the Thrashers, Atlanta Hawks and operate Philips Arena.
“It was interesting to hear from the Atlanta Sports Council and how it plays a vital role in bringing economic value to the city by bringing large events to the city ofAtlanta, such as the 2007 Final Four and the Super Bowl,” said graduate student Chad Thomas.
The group enjoyed an exciting Atlanta Thrashers hockey game at Philips Arena on Thursday evening. The trip culminated inAthens,Ga.for the Mississippi State-Georgia football game on Saturday, Oct. 21.
