OXFORD – Goliath was just too much for David this time.
Following a magical run through the playoffs that included three-straight road wins, East Webster was stifled by an overpowering Bassfield defense on Friday in the Class 2A State championship game at Ole Miss’ Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford.
The Yellowjackets held the Wolverines to just 8 total offensive yards in the first half and Bassfield went on to defeat East Webster 39-20 to claim the school’s fourth-straight state title and fifth in the last seven years.
“That (Bassfield) offensive line and defensive line is just hard to compete with,” East Webster head coach Doug Wilson said. “That’s what gave us trouble all night.”
Each team ended the season with a 14-2 overall record.
