By KELLY DANIELS Starkville Daily News Republican congressional nominee Gregg Harper received a public endorsement Tuesday from the Mississippi Association of Realtors. Melanie Mitchell, principal broker and co-owner of Prudential Starkville Properties, spoke on behalf of the association during a press conference Tuesday afternoon at Mississippi State’s Hunter Henry Center. “The Mississippi Association of Realtors. is proud to endorse Gregg Harper in his effort to represent the people of Mississippi’s third congressional district,” she said. “Asrealtors and as businessmen and women, we know how important it is to elect pro-business leaders who think like we do and who have our best interest at heart and in mind. “We know that Gregg will be that person in Washington.”
Harper, from Rankin County, has been an attorney for 27 years and currently serves prosecutor for Brandon and Richland while maintaining a private firm. His support for lower taxes has been an attraction to business owners throughout his campaign. “With the serious challenges facing today’s economy, we need serious people in Washington who will fight for Mississippi’s businesses,” said Mitchell. “Gregg Harper is that person, and I want everyone to join the REALTORS of the third congressional district and elect Gregg Harper, our next congressman from the great state of Mississippi.” Harper said Tuesday that members of the association and small businesses are the creators of jobs. “Small businesses represent two out of three jobs,” he said. “They are the bread and butter of our society.”
The economy
In light of the current economic crisis, Harper pointed to the way the U.S. has managed the energy industry. “Our country has a failed energy policy,” he said, attributing much of its economic failure to gas prices. “We have to fix that.” Harper said he supported drilling for oil offshore and creating new oil refineries on the homeland. “We’re the only country in the world that does not get its own recourses,” said Harper, offering his support for new ways of handling energy, such as clean coal technology, safe nuclear energy and wind and solar energy. Harper asserted that he did not approve of the idea of an economic stimulus package. “If your government has the ability to send you a check, guess what? You’re paying too much tax money,” said Harper. Harper’s name will be on the ballot on Nov. 4. “Only 14 days, but who’s counting besides my wife and me,” he said.
Harper’s background
Harper and his wife, Sidney, have been married for 29 years. They have two children. Harper is a member, deacon and college Sunday school teacher at Crossgates Baptist Church in Brandon. His social platforms include pro-life support. “I believe that birth begins at conception,” he said Tuesday. Other platforms include the promise to work to stop illegal immigration, strengthen the military and protect the right to bear arms. The life member of the National Rifle Association is also the board attorney for the Baptist Children’s Village.
