Two incumbents qualify to seek Election Commission slots
Tuesday, 26 August 2008
By BRIAN HAWKINS
Starkville Daily News

No candidates have qualified to run for the District 5 seat on the Oktibbeha County School Board, but two incumbent members of the County Election Commission have qualified.
District 3 Commissioner Myles Carpenter and District 4 Commissioner Joe Baker submitted the necessary petitions to qualify as candidates, officials reported Monday. Both the school board and election commission races will be decided on the Nov. 4 general election ballot along with those for president, U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives and Mississippi Supreme Court justice and some Court of Appeals judges.
Members of the county school board serve staggered six-year terms, and the seat for Supervisor District 5 is on this year’s ballot, said Circuit Clerk Angie McGinnis. Jossie Redmond currently serves in the District 5 seat.
Candidates for the county school board must live within the Oktibbeha County School District area outside the Starkville School District lines, McGinnis said.
School board candidates run in non-partisan races and qualify by submitting a petition of at least 50 registered voters to the Circuit Clerk’s Office.
No primary is held in the school board race.
Election Commission candidates run by county supervisor district and must qualify in the Chancery Clerk’s Office by submitting a petition of at least 50 registered voters from the district in which they are running by 5 p.m. Sept. 5.
When the qualifying deadline passes, the chancery clerk submits the list of candidates to the Board of Supervisors for certification to be placed on the ballot. Election Commission candidates may run by political party affiliation, but no primary is held.
Qualifying for school board and Election Commission candidates ends at 5 p.m. Sept. 5.
The necessary forms and petition sheets for both Election Commission and School Board candidates may be picked up at the Circuit Clerk’s Office in the Oktibbeha County Courthouse Annex on West Main Street in downtown Starkville.
McGinnis said there are other important dates local registered voters should remember for this year’s election, including:
• Last day to register to vote in the Nov. 4 general election — Oct. 3.
• Last day to register to vote in the Nov. 4 general election if registering by mail — Forms must be postmarked by Oct. 5.
• Saturdays on which the Circuit Clerk’s Office will be open for absentee voting prior to the general election — Oct. 25 and Nov. 1.
• Date on which any necessary runoff elections from the general election will be held — Nov. 18 for election commissioners; Nov. 25 for judicial and special election races.
For more information about this year’s elections or questions about declaring candidacy in a local race, contact the Circuit Clerk’s Office at 323-1356 or drop by the office in the county courthouse during regular business hours (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) Monday to Friday.
