The population of Sturgis is about to increase by several thousand people over its current citizenry of 250 residents.
The thousand of attending the 12th annual Sturgis South All-Bike Motorcycle Rally this weekend have already begun to descend on Oktibbeha County for, and rally organizers have been busy this week making final preparations.
“We’re excited about this year’s Rally, and we hope folks will come out and enjoy the sights and some great music,” said Donny Hanson, president and entertainment director for the Rally.
The first sanctioned Rally was held Sept. 20 and 21, 1997, and attracted 500 bikers and a total attendance of 800 people. In recent years, the Rally has seen attendance of more than 35,000 people.
Rally activities officially get under way today with a free “Thursday Night Special” concert at Diane Jackson City Park. The band Suicide Shift from Louisville will perform beginning at 8 p.m. today.
Actual motorcycle events for the Rally will kick off with the annual Dinner Ride on Friday.
The ride procession will line up in front of Sturgis Town Hall at 3:30 p.m. Friday and will leave Sturgis at 4 p.m. with an escort by the Mississippi Highway Patrol Motorcycle Brigade leading the riders, followed by the rally staff and registered Friends of the Rally.
The ride will proceed west from Sturgis on Highway 12 and move through Starkville on Highway 12 West to Highway 182, with a stop at the Village Cycle Circle on Highway 182 at 4:30 p.m. The ride will depart Village Cycle Center at 5:30 p.m., taking U.S. 82 to Highway 25 South to head to Louisville.
The ride will stop at the Louisville Coliseum at 6:15 p.m. and depart at 6:45 p.m., heading northwest on Highway 15 to Ackerman and then turning back east on Highway 12 to Sturgis.
The ride will conclude at 7:30 p.m. and will be an 80-mile round trip. Participating bikers should have plenty of fuel and wear helmets, Rally organizers say.
When the Dinner Ride passes through Starkville, all eastbound lanes of Highway 12 will be closed to traffic, with Starkville police officers set at each intersection for traffic control.
