Proceeds from charity golf tournament to establish scholarship
Thursday, 31 July 2008

Starkville Daily News

Proceeds from a charity golf tournament scheduled this weekend will be used to establish a scholarship fund in memory of a Mississippi State student killed in a car accident in January.
The third annual Joe Henson Memorial Tiki Classic is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at the Highland Plantation Golf and Country Club. The Tiki Classic is a three-person scramble with an entry fee of $140 per player and $420 per team. All players must be age 21 or older.
The tournament’s namesake was a fixture in Left Field Lounge at Dudy Noble Field, Polk-DeMent Stadium and was described as an avid supporter and “adoptive parent” of MSU students and athletes. Tournament organizers hope to raise $5,000 to establish a scholarship in memory of MSU student Matthew Gaskin, who was one of two people killed Jan. 25 in an predawn crash on Oktoc Road.
“Matthew Gaskin was an outstanding young man. Full of promise and energy, his life was cut short in a car accident...,” said Jeff Jones, one of the tournament organizers. “He worked hard, smiled big and was a constant source of laughter for his friends. With this memorial scholarship, we are promising that the smiles and friendships will continue for many other students in MSU’s future.”
Once established through the MSU Foundation, the Gaskin Scholarship will offer an annual award of $1,500, with the first recipient named in May 2009 and honored at the fourth Henson Tiki Classic in August 2009. Included with the entry fee for the tournament are the following activities:
Friday
• 7 to 9 p.m. — A meal at the Tiki Bar at Rick’s Cafe’ Americain.
Saturday
• 11:30 a.m. — Registration and lunch at Highlands Plantation. Range balls and golf carts are included.
• 1 p.m. — Tournament tee-off, with other longest drive, closest to the pin and other contests throughout the course.
• 7 to 9 p.m. — Hors d’oeuvres at Cowbell’s Bar and Grill.
Sunday
• 11:30 a.m. — Registration and lunch at Highlands Plantation. Range balls and golf carts are included.
• 1 p.m. — Tournament tee-off, with other longest drive, closest to the pin and other contests throughout the course.
