SDN Staff Reports Those looking for a way to celebrate America’s Independence Day today can join hundreds of fellow residents at the Starkville Sportsplex this evening. Public festivities at the Sportplex are set to begin at 7 p.m. with free ice cream cones served by Isiah Wicks, Roger Fulton and friends. The ice cream cone giveaway will continue until 9 p.m. or supplies run out. Beginning at 7:30 and continuing until 8:30 p.m., candidates in this year’s elections are invited to speak. Candidates planning to participate should call 323-4738 or 324-0274 if they plan to participate.
From 8:30 to 8:50 p.m., John Robert Arnold, Fenton Peters and the Arnold-Peters Happy Singers will perform and lead the crowd in patriotic songs and other favorites. A fireworks display will provide the finale to the festivities at 9 p.m. Today’s Independence Day celebration is coordinated by the Starkville Parks and Recreation Department. Officials want to remind residents living within the Starkville city limits that individual fireworks use is illegal and could result in a fine or arrest on a misdemeanor charge if caught by the authorities. Both the Fire Department and Police Department will be on the lookout for fireworks use other than the planned public display at the Sportsplex. |
