Tuesday, 17 June 2008 |
SDN Staff Reports The 27-member campus committee named to screen resumes of potential candidates for the presidency of Mississippi State University will hold its first meeting Friday. Higher Education Commissioner Tom Meredith and search consultant Jack Baker of Baker and Associates of Atlanta, Ga., will meet at noon Friday with the Search Advisory Committee in the board room of the Templeton Music Museum on the fourth floor of Mitchell Memorial Library on campus.
Appointed in late May, Search Advisory Committee members will assist the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) with its search for the successor to recent president Robert "Doc" Foglesong, who resigned the presidency in March after just two years on the job. During Friday's meeting, the committee will discuss the presidential search process and its role. When the panel has narrowed finalists for the presidency to be interviewed by the IHL board, some of its members will participate in the interview proces, officials say. Chosen based on recommendations by university and community constituencies and to reflect key members of the university community as well as the public and private sectors, the MSU Search Advisory Committee members include: • Dr. Bill Kibler, vice president for student affairs, who will serve as committee chair. • Richard Adkerson, MSU Foundation president. • Dr. David Breaux, department head and professor, Department of Political Science and Public Administration. • Dr. Susan Bridges, professor of computer science and engineering • Dr. Shane Burgess, associate professor and director of the College of Veterinary Medicine. • Greg Byrne, athletic director. • Beth Clay, director of the Bulldog Club. • Dr. Donna Clevinger, dean of the Meridian Campus. • Frances Coleman, dean of MSU Libraries. • Braxton Coombs, president of the MSU Student Association. • Dr. Linda Cornelious, professor and interim head of the Department of Instructional Systems and Workforce Development. • Dr. Susan Diehl, professor of forest resources. • David Jones, national president, MSU Alumni Association. • Dr. Patricia Knight, head of the Coastal Research and Extension Center. • Dr. Kelly Marsh, associate professor of English in the College of Arts and Sciences. • Dr. Melissa Moore, associate professor of marketing in the College of Business and Industry. • Dr. Albert Myles, professor of community resource development for MSU Extension Service. • Dr. David Nagel, president of the Robert Holland Faculty Senate and extension professor of horticulture in the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences. • Dr. Mark Novotny, head of the Department of Physics and Astronomy. • Joy Odom, administrative assistant and staff representative. • Dr. Lynn Richardson, dean of the College of Business and Industry. • Janette Self, member, Board of Aldermen, City of Starkville. • Dr. David Shaw, professor and director of the GeoResources Institute. • Mark D. Thomas, president of the Graduate Student Association. • Dr. James West, dean of the School of Architecture. • Dr. Robert Wolverton, professor of foreign languages in the College of Arts and Sciences. • Dr. Jerry Gilbert, associate provost for academic affairs at Mississippi State, will serve as IHL’s search liaison throughout the search process. In addition, during its May meeting, the IHL Board of Trustees approved the use of Atlanta-based Baker and Associates, LLC, as the Board’s executive search consultant. Two names not on the committee were MSU research vice president Kirk Schulz and Interim President Vance Watson, both of whom have been mentioned as potential presidential candidates in recent months. Watson has said publicly he is interested in seeking the presidency on a permanent basis and confirmed his intentions during a recent interview with the Daily News. Schulz has been non-committal on his intentions when asked by other media representatives. The Search Advisory Committee members were chosen based on recommendations by university constituencies and reflect key members of the university community as well as the public and private sectors. The Search Advisory Committee is charged with identifying the most capable and qualified applicants and nominees to be presented to the Board Search Committee for review. The Board Search Advisory Committee, which is chaired by Scott Ross of West Point, in late April spent a day on campus meeting with MSU students, faculty, staff, administrators, alumni and the public seeking feedback on the qualities sought in the university's next president. Information from those sessions was used in drafting the job description for the position. Some Search Advisory Committee members will also participate throughout the interview process with the Board of Trustees.
