Tedder was also named the district's Outstanding Teacher (Teacher of the Year) for 2007-2008. By SHOSHANA BRACKETT Starkville Daily News A dedicated Armstrong Middle School teacher was recently named the Starkville School District's Teacher of the Year. Ginger Tedder, a seventh-grade English teacher for the Trailblazers team, said she shares the award with many others. "An award like this is really a group award because you're only as strong as the people around you," she said. "This is definitely a team effort," she said. "There are so many wonderful faculty and staff members in the district that assist on a daily basis as well as people in the community and my family." Tedder said it was an honor to receive the award.
"I just do what I love to do," she said. "It's very gratifying to get an award for doing what you love." Tedder has taught for nearly two years at AMS and previously taught for two years at Starkville High School. Originally from Vardaman, Tedder is a graduate of Mississippi State University with a degree in secondary education and certification in music, English and social studies. Tedder is currently pursuing her National Board Certification, a rigorous year-long process. Tedder said she became a teacher because she loves seeing students succeed and become excited about learning. "It's extremely rewarding to see students actually learn something for the first time," she said. The opportunity to make a difference in children's lives, including helping shape them as citizens, is another reason Tedder said she loves teaching. Tedder helps students grow as community members and young leaders through her work as co-advisor for the AMS Builders Club, National Junior Honor Society and AMS Student Council. She also serves on several committees at AMS and within the district. Tedder said there are many things she enjoys about teaching middle school students. "They're always energetic and always excited, and most of them really appreciate your efforts," she said. "Middle schoolers are at that age where they are still moldable," she said. "You can still somewhat affect them as a person in a positive way. It is a fun age." Tedder, along with AMS teacher April Dill and SHS teacher Mandy Kinney, earned the district's Outstanding Team award for their project, Living Legacies. Several other district faculty and staff members were also recognized for their work this year including: • Jason Young, SHS teacher — Outstanding First Year Teacher. • Julie Kennedy, AMS assistant principal — Outstanding Certified Non-Classroom Educator. • Abby Ward, Millsaps Career and Technology Center technician — Outstanding Non Certified Salaried Personnel. • Robert Glenn, SHS custodian — Outstanding Classified Support Staff. |
