With a couple more months of physical training ahead of them, two Overstreet Elementary School teachers continue to look forward to participating in a half-marathon to raise money for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Pam Morton, Overstreet’s reading facilitator, and Gabrielle Mills, an Overstreet teacher, began training in January for the 13-mile Country Music Half Marathon on April 26 in Nashville.
The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is a voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services.

Morton and Mills are participating in part to support a co-worker whose niece is currently in remission from leukemia.
“We felt like this was something we could do to help out because this is part of our school family,” Mills said.
Neither have participated in such a lengthy race before.
“I’ve participated in a couple of the Run for Education 1-milers,” Morton said.
“I want to be able to say ‘I did this,’” she said.
The two are part of Starkville’s Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Team in Training.
With help from their Team in Training coach, they follow a rigorous training schedule involving six days of physical training each week including running, cross training and a group walk together.
“We’re hoping to raise $2,400 each, and all the money goes to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society,” Morton said.
The two are also involving Overstreet students in their efforts as part of a service learning grant at the school.
“We’re trying to teach the kids about helping others,” Mills said.
“We’re carrying Overstreet with us, we’re taking all these children with us, their donations and their hearts,” Morton said.
