For the Daily News WASHINGTON — The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act has allocated $2.8 million to Mississippi to develop and administer a residential rebate program for the purchase of energy-saving appliances, U.S. Rep. Travis Childers, D-First District, announced recently. By encouraging consumers to replace old appliances with new ENERGY STAR qualified models, this rebate program will save energy, stimulate the economy, and reduce costs for North Mississippians. The program is tentatively scheduled to begin in Mississippi in March 2010. “In today’s tough times, cutting costs is a top priority for everyone. The Recovery Act’s appliance rebate program will help consumers save energy and money,” said Childers.
“By encouraging the purchase of more energy-efficient appliances, the program will lead to lower energy bills and will promote American energy independence. Appliance rebates will increase affordability of necessary home appliances for hard-working North Mississippians, allow individuals’ money go further, and help stimulate the economy.” Prior to the end of Fiscal Year 2009, the U.S. Department of Energy awarded 10 percent of states’ ENERGY STAR appliance rebates, with the balance to be delivered following approval of each state’s application and program plan. DOE is now awarding Mississippi with its remaining 90 percent. Eligible appliances under the State Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program (SEEARP) include: • Dishwashers • Room air conditioners • Refrigerators • Clothes washers • Freezers • Gas storage water heaters • Tankless water heathers • Geothermal heat pumps • Heat pump water heaters • Air source heat pumps • Gas furnaces • Central air conditioners For information and updates regarding the appliance rebate program, visit the following address: http://www.mississippi.org/index.php?id=752 .
