GSDP seeks nominations for annual awards

The Greater Starkville Development Partnership is seeking nominations for several of the community’s highest honors.
Nominations are now being accepted for the R. Clay Simmons Exemplary Enterprise Award, the T. E. Veitch Community Service Award, the Service to the Military Award, and the Education Hall of Fame Awards.
These awards will be presented to honorees during the GSDP’s annual banquet on Jan. 28. More information and complete nomination packets may be obtained at the GSDP offices, located at 200 E. Main St., or by calling 323-3322. The nomination deadlines for these awards is Dec. 9 at 5 p.m.
 
R. Clay Simmons Exemplary Enterprise  Award
 
The R. Clay Simmons Exemplary Enterprise Award was established in 1995 to recognize a firm in the Starkville area that has made outstanding contributions to the community and has manifested superior business practices.
R. Clay Simmons was an example of the finest in community and business leadership, and this award is given annually to a business firm in the Starkville area by the R. Clay Simmons Foundation through the Starkville Area Chamber of Commerce, an entity of the GSDP.
Firms eligible for this award must be for-profit and may be any size. Criteria for selection include civic involvement; contributions to educational advancement; economic development; as well as business practices. A complete list of selection criteria with examples is available at the GSDP.
 
T.E. Veitch Community Service Award
 
The T. E. Veitch Community Service Award is the most prestigious recognition of community service given by the GSDP each year. Nominations for the award may be made by organizations or individuals.
To be considered for the award, nominees must show:
• Continuing involvement in community affairs.
• Community involvement that enhances in a meaningful way the common good or the community;
• Dedication to service above self.
• Work an unselfish voluntary nature.
• Service clearly identifiable as worthwhile for community betterment.
 
Service to the Military Award
 
The Military Affairs Committee Service to the Military Award will be awarded to an organization or individual who has provided significant service to the military community of Oktibbeha County. This award may be given for a single, significant event or in recognition of sustained support over the years. The award was established in 2008 and the first honoree, the Starkville Daily News, was recognized during the 2009 banquet.
Criteria which will be considered in choosing the award winner will include:
• Service rendered should provide direct benefit to military members.
• Service should enhance the image and reputation of the military and/or military organizations.
• Service should be above and beyond that which is required of an individual as part of their employment or outside the mission of the organization (however, if an organization or individuals performs their duty in a manner that exceed expectations, they may be recognized).
• Activities should enhance the quality of life of the military community; the individual or organization should promote awareness of the military community
• Service should support the initiatives of the military organizations in the community.
It is not necessary for a nominee to meet all of the criteria listed, but these criteria are typical of what is expected of a winner of this award.
 
Education Hall of Fame
 
The purpose of the Education Hall of Fame is to recognize Starkville area residents who have achieved state, regional, and national recognition in the field of education, and to honor and show appreciation for local citizens who have “put Starkville on the map” because of their distinguished work and activities in the field of education (including teaching, research, writing, academic achievements, and professional society participation).
Educators working in any school district in Oktibbeha County and Starkville, either public or independent, may be nominated for induction into the Hall of Fame. Plaques with portraits will be mounted in the Greensboro Center in honor of the selected distinguished educators) following the presentation of the award.
Additional awards which will be presented will be the Crystal Pineapple Tourism Award and the Industry of the Year Award.
