Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Department investigators are awaiting the results of a Monday autopsy as they continue to probe the Sunday morning shooting death of a local hunter. An autopsy on Douglas Marion Childs, 32, of Jeff Peay Road, was performed at the State Crime Laboratory in Jackson on Monday, but results are not expected for a few days, said Chief Deputy George Carrithers on Monday. Childs was found dead about 30 feet inside a wooded area off Hawkins Road in western Oktibbeha County shortly after 7 a.m. Sunday.
Deputies had verified that Childs was hunting in the Hawkins Road area early Sunday morning, as were several others. The area where he was found is located a short distance from the Oktibbeha-Choctaw county line. Carrithers on Monday said deputies were continuing to interview potential witnesses in the case as they worked to piece together the circumstances that led to Childs’ death. Sheriff Dolph Bryan on Sunday would not comment on whether Childs’ shooting is believed to have been accidental, nor would he describe it as a homicide. When found, Childs had one visible gunshot wound, though Bryan would not specify where the would was located. About the time Childs was shot, a man reported hearing a gunshot, then an exclamation of “Oh, no!” when he called another member of the hunting club, Bryan said Sunday. The hunting club member went to the area to check out the gunshot report and found Childs’ body, Bryan said. Anyone with information about Childs’ shooting is encouraged to call the Sheriff’s Department at 323-2421. Information regarding funeral arrangements for Childs will be announced as soon as they become available.
