A Starkville man who has been reported to have been going door-to-door begging for money on the pretense of helping his sick daughter is now behind bars after taking his pandering act too far, police say.
Develle Henderson, 32, of Long Street, was charged Monday with robbery and kidnapping in connection with a Saturday night incident, said Starkville Police Department Sgt. Chadd Garnett.
Henderson, who was previously out on a $30,000 bond for a prior arrests on two counts of uttering a forgery and one count of forgery, had been arrested by police officers Sunday night on a second forgery charge.
Following an initial Municipal Court appearance Monday night, Henderson was denied bond on the robbery and kidnapping charges.
As detectives were reviewing Henderson’s case file Monday morning, a local man and his fiancee filed a formal report about the Saturday night incident, Garnett said.
Police had received multiple reports over the last several weeks about Henderson knocking on doors in residential neighborhoods and at apartment complexes across the city begging for money, saying he needed it to buy an inhaler for his asthmatic daughter, Garnett said.
Sunday night alone, police received multiple reports about Henderson knocking on doors late at night, and officers picked him up after spotting him in the area where the reports were made, Garnett said. He was arrested Sunday on the forgery charge.
When the male victim of Saturday night’s incident involving Henderson filed a report Monday, police learned that Henderson had knocked on the door of the apartment where the man and his fiancee lived, telling them the story about his sick daughter’s need medicine, Garnett said.
The confrontation between the victim and Henderson escalated to the point where the victim was threatened until he gave Henderson the $20 he wanted, Garnett said.
“The suspect also had one hand in his pocket the whole time and there was a bulge in the pocket that led the victim to believe there might be a weapon, though no weapon was ever displayed,” Garnett said.
Henderson then reportedly forced the victim to get into his car and drive him to some apartments near Oktibbeha County Hospital, Garnett said. The victim and his fiancee waited until Monday to report the incident involving Henderson out of fear for their safety, Garnett said.
The unrelated forgery charges against Henderson, stem from an Oct. 21 incident in which he was going door-to-door begging for money and convinced an unspecified victim drive him to get cash money from an automated teller machine, Garnett said.
As the victim went to get the money, Henderson took a check from the victim’s checkbook, and later used it to pass an electronic check before using the actual check itself, Garnett said.
“We understand that several people have encountered this suspect, and we want anyone who has dealt with him to contact the Police Department they were victimized by him,” Garnett said.
The Police Department may be reached at 323-4131.
