After 10 years at First Baptist Church, the Community Thanksgiving worship service is on the move. In an attempt to be more inclusive of various denominations of the Christian faith, this ecumenical celebration of thanksgiving and praise will be at 6 p.m. Sunday, at First United Methodist Church in Starkville. Father John Bohn of St. Joseph Catholic Church said the location change was made in an attempt to spread the Thanksgiving service around the community in the future. It may be a different location, but all residents are invited to enjoy the praise and worship environment.
The Starkville Ministerial Association sponsors this annual event hopes to make this service one that represents all people in the community. Leading the music ministry for this service will be First United Methodist Church Choir and Blackjack M.B. Church Choir. “We hope to foster a greater sense of ecumenism in our community, and give different churches the opportunity to worship together and get to know one another,” Bohn said. “We also use this worship service to promote social outreach activities like providing for such things as our Helping Hands Ministry.” Helping Hands was started in 1998 by a few local pastors and lay people to serve as a clearinghouse for the local churches to utilize whenever anyone found themselves in need. According to Bohn, as Helping Hands began to grow, the Starkville Ministerial Association began to contribute to its support, especially financially. “(Helping Hands) is now a great asset to our community that provides financial support to needy individuals and families of our community,” Bohn said. “The ministry provides such things as utility bill relief, rent assistance, food vouchers, overnight accommodations, and whatever else a person may find themselves needing.” There will be a collection taken up at the Community Thanksgiving Service which is earmarked especially for Helping Hands. “The Community Thanksgiving Service has been a wonderful event that helps to provide much needed resources for this very important ministry,” Bohn said. “Everyone is invited to attend and to lend their support to this important community organization.” Churches taking part in Sunday’s service includes: First United Methodist Church, Griffin United Methodist Church, Life Church, the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, Blackjack M.B. Church, St. Joseph Catholic Church, Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Care Ministries and First Presbyterian Church.
