For the Daily News Oktibbeha County Hospital is proactively preparing for the challenges that are expected to come from the Healthcare reform initiatives in Washington. One area of focus is the information storage infrastructure. With a number of new applications along with several significant application upgrades on the horizon CITO/Director ITS Chamath N. Wijewardane thought it would be a perfect opportunity to explore new storage technologies that could improve the IT service level at the hospital. As it researched the latest advancements in storage technology the OCH team developed a list of key objectives for new information storage infrastructure:
• Replace an aging storage subsystem. • Increase storage capacity to meet the expanding needs of the entire server line – IBM bladecenters (Linux, Windows, vmWare), IBM System X, IBM System P, PACS, Clinic EHR, etc. • Consistently deliver high performance to support the 650 users. • Ensure 24-hour-a-day, seven-days-a-week availability. • Consolidate and reduce capital expenditure on storage hardware. • Reduce electricity, air conditioning and floor space costs, in keeping with ITS’ Green initiative. • Establish a scalable storage strategy for future expansion. After extensive research and analysis the OCH ITS team determined that the best solution available in the market was the revolutionary IBM XIV Storage System. The IBM XIV Storage System utilizes a grid based architecture that provides unprecedented levels of performance, scalability and reliability. In addition, the XIV system eliminates the complexity typically found in legacy storage systems which will permit the OCH ITS staff to focus on projects aimed at providing a high level of uptime to hospital staff. The OCH team along with the storage experts from The Dynamix Group, a long time systems integration partner, developed an implementation and migration plan that would be completed in record time. Wijewardane, said “We found that the IBM XIV Storage System was not only revolutionary in terms of storage but was revolutionary in terms of the migration process. IBM XIV provides rich features that enable smooth inline migration eliminating long copy or restore time during the transition.” The IBM XIV Storage System deployment at OCH is the first of its kind in the State of Mississippi.
