• Operation Christmas Child Relay Center — On Wednesday, Operation Christmas Child Shoe Box gifts may be dropped of at 1004 Lynn Lane today from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.
Other opportunities to drop off boxes include Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m., Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. and Monday from 8 a.m. to noon.

• Books and Authors meeting set —Hunters take note, do we have a book for you. On Wednesday, Bobby Cole will present his book to us at a “Books and Authors “program at the Starkville Public Library at noon.
His book “Dummy Line” is readable, exciting and suspenseful. Mr. Cole is a hunter, works and lives in West Point, and his business is all about hunting and the outdoors. It will be an entertaining time, come and join the group.
• Senior Enrichment Center Activities set — On Wednesday, enjoy Stitching with Marie from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. At 2 p.m., bring a friend and play games.
To reach the Center, from Highway 12, turn left onto Industrial Park Road at the National Guard Armory. Go three-fourths of a mile, and turn right onto Miley Drive.

• Memorial service set — Former Rust College President Dr. Earnest A. Smith, died Friday in Yazoo City. He was the president of Rust College from 1957-1967.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Morehouse Auditorium in the Doxey Fine Arts Center on the Rust College campus. Donations can be made to the Earnest A. and Milverta G. Smith Endowed Scholarship Fund at Rust College, 150 Rust Ave., Holly Springs, MS 38635.

• Ribbon cutting set at Recycling Center — The Greater Starkville Development Partnership will hold Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Starkville Recycling in honor of the City of Starkville’s free curbside recycling program and in celebration of the Grand Reopening of Starkville Recycling, located at 211 C.C. Clark Road.
These events will occur during National Recycling Week. Starkville became the first city in Mississippi to introduce a free curbside recycling program on Oct. 1 Already, approximately 1,000 households have signed up to participate in the city-wide recycling effort.
Starkville Recycling will offer a tour of their facility, and residents may use this opportunity to sign up for the city’s free curbside recycling program and pick up free recycling bags. Refreshments will be served.
• Computer classes at Emerson set — Robert Jamerson will lead computer classes from noon to 4 or 5 p.m. at the Emerson Family Center. Pre-register for the class by calling 320-4607.
• GED Tests, registration and information — Audra Williamson will lead the program, “GED Tests, Registration and Information” from 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays at the Emerson Family Center. To pre-register, call 324-6944.
• Yoga classes set for the Sportsplex — Yoga class are being held on Wednesday nights from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. at the Sportsplex. Fees are $65 for an eight week session.
• A Night of Beauty set — The Mississippi State University Fashion Board will hold “A Night of Beauty: Discovering the Missing Ingredient” beginning at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
The goal of this program is to give young women tips and tricks on how to maintain proper upkeep and most of all how to connect inner beauty with outer beauty.
This program will assess the areas of skin, hair, nails, health, fashion trends, and self esteem. Tickets will be $5 in advance and can be purchased from any fashion board member.
• Diabetes Support Group — Oktibbeha County Hospital’s Diabetes Support Group will meet Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. for a special treat, “Holiday Healthy Cooking” with registered dietitian Ellen Easley Wallace of Cooking with Ellen.
Recipes and samples will be provided and Ellen’s cookbook will be available for purchase.

• Debtors Anonymous to meet — Does this sound like you? Poor saving habits. Not planning for taxes, retirement or other not-recurring but predictable items, and then feeling surprised when they come due; a “live for today, don’t worry about tomorrow” attitude.” If so, help is available: Debtors Anonymous is a 12 step program for people with problems with money or debt.

• Starkville Multicultural Lions Club — The Starkville Multicultural Lions Club will hold a general meeting beginning at 5:50 p.m. Wednesday at the auditorium at Memorial Hall on the Mississippi State campus.

• Downtown Toastmasters to meet — The Starkville Downtown Toastmasters will meet at 7 a.m. Thursday at the Comfort Inn and Suites. Those interested in improving public speaking ability are invited to attend a Toastmasters meeting.
Toastmasters provides an excellent venue for developing and polishing your skills in a very supportive and entertaining environment.

• NARFE to meet — The National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE) will meet Thursday at Barnhill’s Restaurant on Highway 12 in Starkville at 11:30 a.m.
The guest speaker will be Andrew Rendon, director of the G.V. “Sonny” Montgomery Center for American Veterans, which is located on the Mississippi State University campus.
All active and retired federal employees are invited to attend. There will not be a NARFE meeting in December.

• MUW Lunch Bunch to meet — The MUW Lunch Bunch will meet Thursday at Mi Hacienda restaurant on Highway 12 West. This is a week earlier than usual due to Thanksgiving. • MSU Steel Drum Band concert set — The MSU Steel Drum Band will hold a free concert on the MSU Drill Field from noon until 1 p.m. Thursday.
They will be selling refreshments to help raise money for equipment and scholarships in the MSU Music Department.
• Festival of Trees closed — The Festival of Trees will be closed due to a Mississippi State athletic event.
• Red Cross certification classes set — The Oktibbeha County Red Cross will offer Standard First Aid on Thursday. All classes are held at the Chapter office and begin at 5 p.m.

• Casserole Kitchen to serve lunch — The Casserole Kitchen serves hot, nutritious meals to anyone in need at no charge.
All who are in need of a hot, homecooked meal are welcome.
Supper is served between 6 and 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Fellowship Hall (ground floor) of First Presbyterian Church, located at 307 University Drive, in Starkville.
These meals are prepared, served and donated by volunteers as a ministry from churches in Starkville and Oktibbeha County.

• Mission Mississippi Starkville meeting set — Mission Mississippi is dedicated to promoting harmony and unity among Christians across racial and denominational lines.

• “Grandparents are Great” class — A “Grandparents are Great” class will be held Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Oktibbeha County Hospital Educational Facility.
The course brings grandparents up-to-date on the latest in infant care, such as nutrition, safety and educational play ideas. It also includes a tour of the hospital’s labor and delivery, nursery and postpartum areas.
It is offered once each quarter. The fee is $10 per grandparent, and pre-registration is required. For more information or to enroll, call 615-3364.
• Registration deadline — The 12th Annual Turkey Trot 5k and Canned Food Drive will be held Saturday at 8 a.m.
The race will begin and end in front of the Sanderson Center on the Mississippi State campus. The registration fee is $20 plus three canned goods.

• CSI Fossils event set — From sea lilies to petrified poop, investigate fossils in this fun workshop by Dr. Renee Clary and Dr. John Guyton of Mississippi State University at the Noxubee Refuge Visitor Center at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Get a hands-on overview of the different ways in which living things can be preserved, and learn what types of fossils to look for in Mississippi. Participants will be sorting through Mississippi gravel in our quest for ancient remains, so come prepared to get dirty.
Sunday
• Community Thanksgiving Service set — The Starkville Ministerial Association is hosting the Starkville Community Thanksgiving Service at 6 p.m. Nov. 22 at First United Methodist Church. Music for the service will be lead by the First UMC Chior and Griffin UMC Choir.
Area residents and all area churches are invited and encouraged to attend to make this an ecumenical service that represents all people of our community.
Monday
• Exchange Club to meet — The Starkville Exchange Club will meet at 11:30 a.m. Monday at McAlister’s Deli (Coach’s Corner). All members are encouraged to attend.
The mission of the Exchange Club is to support Americanism, prevent child abuse, provide community service, and support youth programs. For further information, call 323-2940.
• Rotary Club to meet — The Mississippi Children’s Museum, under construction at LeFleur’s Bluff State Park in Jackson, will be the topic of this week’s program at the meeting of Starkville Rotary Club.
The $24.5 million museum is scheduled to be completed in Fall 2010.
Guests will be Charlotte Seals, assistant superintendent for Madison County Public Schools, and Lindsay Buford of the Jackson Chamber of Commerce. Rotary meets each Monday at noon at the Starkville Country Club.
• Line dancing classes set — Line dancing classes are set for Mondays at 1 p.m. at the Sportsplex. Dance steps will be demonstrated and taught each week to new members.
• Starkville Duplicate Bridge Club — Duplicate bridge will be played at 1 p.m. every Monday on the ladies parlor on the ground level of the First Methodist Church. The bridge games are open to the public.

• Senior Enrichment Center activities set — On Monday at the Senior Enrichment Center, enjoy visiting all day. At 10 a.m., a “Second Cup” for men only will be held – coffee and donuts will be served. At 1:30 p.m., walk in and play bridge.
• Thanksgiving Volleyball Clinic set — Starkville High volleyball coach Lauren Love will instruct campers on the fundamentals of volleyball. Campers will learn and apply their skills within a positive, supportive environment, allowing for the overall enjoyment of volleyball.
The camp is open to all girls, grades 5 to 8 and will be held at the Starkville Sportsplex Gym on Lynn Lane, Monday and Tuesday. On-site registration begins at 12:30 p.m. Monday. Cost is $40 per camper. For more information, call Coach Lauren Love at 325-9584.
• Professor West to be honored – Dr. Robert West will be recognized by the Mississippi Humanities Council as Mississippi State University’s 2009 Humanities Teacher of the Year.
Dr. West is an associate professor in the Department of English at the university. He will present a lecture, “Mystery, Plentitude, Contradiction, and Composure” Teaching Poetry as Resistance, in the John Grisham Room, Mitchell Memorial Library, at 3 p.m. Monday. The public is invited. A reception honoring Dr. West will follow his lecture.
• Parent and Tot Water Class set — Parent and Tot Water class is offered at the Wellness Connection on Mondays at 5 p.m. and Thursdays at 10 a.m. It’s a 30 minute long class that teaches tots some preswimming skills and gets them used to being in the water.
Dads, moms and grandparents are welcome to bring kids 6 months to 3 years old. Kids have to wear swim diapers and one does not have to be the member of the Wellness Connection, just ask for Parent and Tot card at the front desk and then get it punched on the days you can make it to the class.

On the horizon
• Coat Drive set — Check Advance is initiating a coat drive from now through Nov. 25 to help local residents in need this winter.
Please donate new or gently used coats, hats, gloves or scarves and drop them off at Check Advance on Hwy. 12 W. All winter wear will be donated to the Palmer Home for Children.
• Black Tie Ball Fundraiser set — Rising Star Lodge No. 31 is planning the “Classiest Event of the Year!” The organization’s Annual Black Tie Ball will be held on Nov. 27, at the Shrine Building, located on Highway 25 South, Starkville.
The Black Tie Ball will be held from 7 p.m. to midnight. Music and entertainment will be provided by D.J. Love Bone.
The dress for this prestigious event is formal or semi-formal. Tickets are available today. Advance donations are $12 for singles, $20 for couples and door donations are $15 per person.

• Starkville Recycling to close — Starkville Recycling will be closed Nov. 26 and 27 for Thanksgiving. Collection routes will resume on Monday.
• Sanitation Department closing — The Sanitation Department will be closed on Nov. 26 and 27 in observance of the Thanksgiving Holidays.
The regular residential pickup schedule will continue on Nov. 30.
• POP Cheer and Dance Team registration set — Competitive and recreational cheer and dance teams are open for registration. The final interest meeting of the year is set for Nov. 30 at the Starkville Sportsplex from 5:30 to 6 p.m.

• SHS Theatre performance — The Starkville High School Theater Department invites you to their performance of “Almost, Maine” on DEC. 1 at 7 pm in the SHS Theatre.
“Almost, Maine” is the SHS Festival Competition Play, and students will compete in the festival on Friday, December 4, at approximately 8 pm in the McComas Hall Theatre on the campus of Mississippi State University.
Tickets for the performance at SHS are $5 at the door to help with travel expenses. The show lasts about 45 minutes and is a compilation of various vignettes centered around love.
• AIDS Walk set — December 1 is World AIDS Day, a time to call the world to respond compassionately to those who suffer from HIV/AIDS and to work together to combat this killer disease.
The Starkville District of the United Methodist Church will host its second AIDS Walk on Dec.1 from 6 to 7 p.m. on the walking track of the Starkville: FUMC Christian Life Center. Walkers are invited to give $10 donation with all proceeds going to fight AIDS. The public is invited to attend.
• SDN Book Club to meet — The SDN Book Club will meet at noon Dec.2 at the SDN Conference Room. Everyone is invited to share a Christmas reading.
• Candy Cane Festival set — People of Purpose will host the 2009 Candy Cane Festival with fun, food and so much more! There will be an Ice Princess and Prince pageant, a “show off” cheer and dance competition and vendors on site for Christmas shopping.
The event is set for 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. December 12 at the Starkville Sportsplex. Tickets are $3 with proceeds going to support P.O.P. Arts and Athletics.

• Bagged leaves and pine straw needed — The Parks and Recreation Department is asking people to bring their bagged leaves and pine straw to McKee Park to help with a big mulching project in an area that has been damaged by erosion.
There are two designated drop off areas near the pavilion. If you have any questions, contact Matthew Rye at 323-2294.
• SHS Class of 1965 missing members – The Starkville High School Class of 1965 is trying to locate two missing class members: Carolyn Ann Brewer and Brever McKellum. If anyone has any information on how to locate these two people, please call Mary Ann Livingston at 324-5084.
• Cheese sales under way — The Starkville Exchange Club is again selling its famous cheese for the holiday season. Available varieties of cheese include mild and sharp cheddar (2 lb. blocks), jalapeno (12 oz blocks), and old granddad (aged cheddar, 2.5 lb. wheels).

• Mentors needed for Project AIM — Project AIM is recruiting community volunteers to mentor students in grades 4 to 8 in the Starkville School District.
Each mentor will meet with his or her student an hour each week at the student’s school.
Training and ongoing support are provided.

• Recycling bins available — Starkville Recycling now has a recycling bin set up to accept plastics (grades 1-6, excluding styrofoam) at the Synergetics location at 501 Highway 12 West.
The organization hopes to have bins at our other two locations soon.
